Future of the Bristol Society

After the sad death of Edith Hughes in 1999 I suggested in our newsletter #24 (February 2000) that, with altogether too few activists, the Society might have to go on "hold" for a while. Nothing was said at the AGM the following April to counter that suggestion, and we have continued in that mode for five years.
The time has now come when changes have to be made. Both Jill and I, for health and other personal reasons, can no longer run the B V V S, and suggest two possible alternatives:
Plan A If there are vegetarians, present members of the Society or otherwise, who are willing and able to take on the job of successfully running an active local society, we shall do all we can to make a smooth hand-over to them. Congresbury and Winscombe, so far out of town, have never been ideal centres for a Bristol society, and we should like to see a rejuvenated society nearer the centre of Bristol.
Plan B In the meantime, to ensure continuity, we are arranging with The Vegetarian Society for the BVVS to be regraded from a ‘group' to an ‘information centre' with Jill as contact, me as her satellite to maintain the website, and Gil Osman as publicity officer. Our modest funds, and our other few remaining assets of value, will be conserved, the funds being used to pay petty expenses and the annual affiliation fee to the International Vegetarian Union, on which our website depends.
I will repay any members who have paid subscriptions in advance for 2006/07 or later, if they write and ask me. I shall record all transactions on the website from time to time, so as to give a full account of the funds in my charge since the accounts for the year ended 31 March 2005 that were presented at the AGM. I shall of course also be ready to publicise on the website any appropriate events, social or otherwise, that are organised, as soon as I am told when and where they are to be held.
After this issue there will be no regular newsletter for the time being, although items of interest will be posted to the website, particularly any progress towards the adoption of Plan A.
Jill and I are sorry to have to make this announcement, but it is unavoidable. We are most grateful to all who have supported us by word, deed, and money over the years; be assured of our continuing good wishes.
