Vegetarian Food Served Here

Café Maitreya

In 2002 a new vegetarian organic café-restaurant opened in Bristol at Easton. This is the Café Maitreya at 89 St Marks Road, Easton BS5 6HY. The unusual name is said to be derived from the Sanskrit maitri for universal love, or loving kindness. The press release tells us that organic ingredients are used wherever practical, to serve fresh tasty vegetarian food, and that the café aims to contribute to an inspired healthy community, liaising with local groups to the benefit of the community. For example, their vegetable waste is to be recycled for use at Bristol Permaculture Group's Garden Road allotment at St Werburgh's City Farm. The café supports principles of fair trade, and preferably with local small-scale enterprises.
Fair-trade coffee and hot chocolate are served, and all-day food, and evening meals. There is a diverse menu with a good vegan choice, and a licence to sell organic wines and beer — or diners may bring their own wine. The café also sells a range of health and healing products: essential oils, aromatherapy blends and flower essences, herbal teas for pregnancy and birth. Take-away drinks and cakes are also available. There is a meeting room for various community activities. A programme of events is planned for talks on healing, nutrition, and green issues, for children's activities, and social evenings. There are plans for a crèche. phone (0117) 951 0100. website: www.cafemaitreya.co.uk email thesnug@cafemaitreya.co.uk

The Bristol restaurants listed below have been taken from the Food & Drink section of The Venue, published in 2000. As it's a little out of date it would be as well to check beforehand. The ‘eateries' are listed in the section as ‘veggie-friendly.'
Riverstation, Jacobs Wells Road (0117) 929 2987
Anthem, St Michael's Hill, Kingsdown (0117) 929 2834
Café Tasca, York Road, Montpelier (0117) 942 6799
Bell's Diner, York Road, Montpelier (0117) 942 0357
Café, Boyces Avenue, Clifton (0117) 946 6577
These have not been tried recently so cannot be positively recommended.

Our group have had lunch/tea at La Ruca, 87/89 Gloucester Road (0117) 973 1192. There is a small café upstairs offering a fairly limited menu, but mainly vegetarian and some vegan, and it won't break the bank.
There is also a café with a good veggie choice in the Riverside Garden Centre, Clift House Road, Southville (0117) 966 7535, (having been to an event at the Create Centre, which you might expect to offer a reasonable choice of vegetarian and organic food, but does neither).

Also recommended: Thali, (Indian vegetarian restaurant) at YorkRoad/Wellington Road, Montpelier. The Café at the Bay Tree (vegetarian), 176 Henleaze Road (behind the health food shop), phone (0117) 962 1115.

Not quite so recently, Hullaballoos, at 46 White Ladies Road was also found to have some good vegetarian dishes on their menu. They have bring-your-own-wine restaurants also at 85 Park Street, and at Musets, 16 Clifton Road.

At the opposite end of our area, we are told that Mazzarino's at 36 Meadow Street, Weston-super-Mare do fine vegan milk shakes. Not a vegetarian establishment, but if you're nearby why not give them a try and some encouragement?

Fresh & Wild at Queen's Road, Bristol (north-west corner of The Triangle, in Maples' old shop) specialise in organic food. Not vegetarian – they sell organic meat, chicken, and fish – but it has a good variety of organic vegetarian foods, and greengrocery, florists, and a pleasant café for snacks or more substantial meals with a wide vegetarian choice.

Further afield:

At Burnham-on-Sea: Adam's Apple, Adam Street (01278) 784 784 adjoining health food shop. Open 9 to 5 & from 7pm in the evening. Not exclusively vegetarian, but offers a good selection at around £8 for a main meal. Also cater for wheat-free diet.

At Exeter, Herbies Vegetarian Restaurant at 15 North Street (01392) 258 473 is open Mon-Sat 11am to 2.30pm & from Tues-Sat 6pm to 9.30pm.

Reported to have excellent food and a large vegetarian menu, with also a large vegan menu. When congratulated on their food it was said that most items on the menu could be made vegan, because the Chef is vegan.

At Glastonbury there are several places in the High Street including the Rainbow Café, and the Café Galatea, (01458) 834 284, that looks good but has not actually been tried.

At Bath, Demuth's Vegetarian Restaurant at 2 North Parade Passage (01225) 446 059 is a must; it's a bit pricier, and sometimes you have to wait a while to be served, but it's worth it for the choice. there are good reports also of the vegetarian pub food at The Porter in George Street (01225) 424 104.

On the A36 at Codford, Warminster is the Hillside Café (next door to a Little Chef). Open Mon-Thurs 6am to 7pm; Fri 6am to 5pm; Sat 6am to Noon. Vegetarian Breakfasts and Lunches available, the Lunch in fact being vegan.

At Wells The Good Earth (01749) 678 600 is another really nice place to eat — lots of space and a small outside area, with vegan choices and not too pricey.
It you are willing to venture further afield and make a day of it, The Orange Tree, Cheltenham (01242) 234 232 is excellent; vegan choices again at reasonable prices.
Slightly further still, but a really nice place to visit is Ross-on-Wye, and it has a good little veggie restaurant in Broad Street (01989) 566 2721.

At Ledbury, Herefordshire (01531) 635 860, The Rice Cake is not a café, but a shop, run by Clio & Michael Lever, VSUK members, selling organic and wholefood groceries and natural products at discount prices. At The Homend Mews, The Homend, Ledbury. More information on www.thericecake.co.uk

At Bodmin, Cornwall, 55 Fore Street, (01208) 74601, Pots coffee shop/restaurant is not vegetarian
but their menu includes many vegetarian & vegan items, & will make any veggie item vegan if possible
open Mon to Sat 9 to 5.30; Sunday 11 to 3pm

While anyone visiting North Wales might like to try The Wall Place in Chapel Street, Conwy (01492) 596 328. This is a really good vegetarian (in fact predominantly vegan) restaurant, well recommended.
