B12: an essential part of a healthful vegan diet. This presentation
will discuss the importance of B12 for vegan health, particularly vital
recent insights on B12, homocysteine and mortality. There is strong evidence
that failing to get adequate B12 may be countering the More
detailed notes for Stephen's talk on 'B12 an essential part of a healthy
plant based diet' Health of elderly vegetarians. This talk will set
out the key elements of a healthful plant-based diet, presenting evidence
that an extra decade of healthy life is a matter of dietary choice. I
will show that modern scientific results are converging with studies of
the diets of our ape relatives to illuminate the characteristics of healthy
diets. These studies all point towards a diet centred on plant foods,
but not just any plant-based diet. This presentation will empower people
to take control of their diet to lay the foundation for a long and healthy
life. Particular attention will be given to dietary choices of benefit
to people already suffering from high cholesterol, clogged arteries, high
blood pressure or weak bones. It is never too late to embrace health. |
Stephen Walsh holds a PhD in Process Systems Engineering from Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine and specialises in data analysis and mathematical modelling. He is Vice-Chair of the UK Vegan Society and has a long-standing interest in vegan nutrition. He recently prepared an international B12 information sheet with the help of other members of the IVU Science Group. This sheet has been widely endorsed and has been reproduced on many vegetarian web-sites in Italian and Spanish as well as in English. He has also published other articles on nutrition and health in "The Vegan", most of which have also been widely reproduced on the Internet. He is a spokesperson for the Vegan Society in contesting inaccurate media reports on veganism and unsubstantiated health claims by the dairy industry. He is actively involved in the UK vegan community and organised the annual UK Vegan Camp for several years. The camp is attended by more than a hundred vegans every year and provides a great opportunity for vegans of all ages and their families to have fun and share experiences. The lessons from those experiences complement the findings of scientific studies to provide the basis for a comprehensive and realistic approach to vegan health.
