David Pye

David Pye has been vegetarian for over 30 years and spent 20 years as a research scientist, he is now self-employed as an IT consultant and has just completed a Masters degree in digital media production. Over the last ten years David has taken a major role in setting up two UK companies and taken them forward to become successful local charities with over 30 employees. He is company secretary of these two charities, which specialise in energy efficiency and organic gardening. David joined the council of the International Vegetarian Union in 1999 and has served as treasurer for the past five years. He has also became a trustee of the UK Vegetarian Society in 1997 and was appointed chair of the charity in December 2003. He lives with his partner Christine in Merseyside, England. His interests include, sailing, computers, world music and environmental issues. David's area of interest is the environmental aspect of vegetarianism and he has spoken at several international congresses on this topic and produced a video especially for the Brazilian Congress. David says, "Environmentalists consistently ignore the environmental advantages of becoming vegetarian. It's an area we really need to target as the argument is so much in our
favour. Its getting environmentalists to listen and understand that's the real issue."

David will present at 36th World Vegetarian Congress the following:

- DVD video and discussion: "Why environmentalists are not vegetarians" .

- Debate (with Caryn Hartglass): 'The environmental issues of vegetarianism"
