The Jubilee year of England has been one of quiet progress in Germany,
where nothing of especial importance took place.
The Annual Meeting of the Bund was held in Dresden on the 7th and
8th June, and was well attended. A Committee was there appointed
to engage a paid agent as lecturer and editor of the official organ,
as the want of a man well versed in all aspects of Vegetarianism
and who is able to spend all his time in propagandist work is acutely
felt. But unfortunately this idea could not be carried out as one
meeting all the requirements could not he found yet.
At the International Vegetarian Congress in London the Bund was
represented by Herr Benno Buerdorff, Leipzig, one of the best known
writers on Vegetarianism. In Germany, while another member of the
Bund, Herr Schwenk, Dresden, exhibited his beautiful grand picture
"Natura Sanat." The Kinderheim-verein "Wohlfahrt"
which is doing good work in educating children to Vegetarianism
was represented at the Congress by its leader, Frau Mertens, Berlin,
and the Vegetarian colony "Heimgarten," near Zurich, sent
as a representative Frilulein Rofel.
A few more Vegetarian Restaurants were opened in several towns
of Germany during the last year, and we have also to record that
a Vegetarian Society was founded in Munich, this eldorado of beer
drinking Germany.
Of the pamphlets issued by the Bund, "One hundred and eleven
Facts in Favour of Vegetarianism," compiled by Herr Benno Buerdorff,
meets with general approval and finds great circulation.
Finally we have to mention that for Vegetarians being in distress
a kind of Friendly Society (Unterstützungs Kasse) has been
established in Berlin, which has already done some good work by
relieving Vegetarians in want of help.
