The work of this Society during the past year has been one of steady
progress. The roll of members has been increased, and the finances
augmented. A large number of high-class lectures and addresses have
been given in Portsmouth and various towns. Papers have been read
and debates initiated in various political debating and other Societies,
and no means have been left untried to make Vegetarianism known
and respected throughout the whole county. Cookery demonstrations
and specimen meals have been had, and were much appreciated. A lending
library for the use of members and-inquirers has been founded containing
many of the Classics and Text Books of Vegetarianism, and has been
found very useful;. Several groups of workers have been formed for
independent action, but affiliated to the Central Committee, and
the prospects of this County Society were never better. Our chief
difficulty is the lack of voluntary helpers to cover that vast field
of good work which spreads itself so temptingly before us - a harvest
ripe for the garnering, and which wants but the reaper and gleaner
to give an unmeasurable reward.
