The progress of the Women's Vegetarian Union continues to make
rapid strides. It now consists of 300 Members and Associates, as
well as several Honorary Members, exclusive of the Members of the
Branches of this Union, of which there are two, one being established
in Lambeth (London), and the other at Brussels. The latter possesses
a Vegetarian Library, and publishes a bi-monthly paper, called La
Réforme Alimentaire, as its official organ, which is
the first Vegetarian periodical that has appeared in Belgium. Another
branch is being formed in America. The income of the Women's Vegetarian
Union from March, 1896, to March, 1897, was £34 8s. 3d., and
its expenditure £30 15s. 7d. Apart from this, the receipts,
during the same period, of its General Agency Department amounted
to £5 2s. 3d., and its expenses to £3 12s. 1d.
The mode of propaganda of the Women's Vegetarian Union is to hold
frequent meetings, social gatherings of members, lectures and cookery
demonstrations (some of the latter being free and held monthly at
the office of the Union); also to endeavour to form branches of
this Union wherever possible, thereby creating interest in food
reform.
By means of the General Agency Department Vegetarian employers
and employees are brought together, thus filling a need so long
felt among Vegetarians. Through its medium information can also
be obtained concerning all that appertains to Vegetarianism and
Hygiene, etc.
Further information can be obtained from the Hon. Secretary.
