The Vegetarian World Forum THE VEGETARIAN No. 2 Vol. 3 - SUMMER 1949 p.3
COMMENCING with this issue thousands of copies of The Vegetarian will be on sale throughout the United States of America, and I take this opportunity to give expression to the very deep sense of fellowship we vegetarians feel for one another wherever we live and work. We in New Zealand, Australia, Africa, India, England and indeed all counties where vegetarianism is practised, are very happy to know that you are organising the American movement in a big way, and it has been a great joy and privilege for me to accept your kind invitation to attend, as one of the European representatives, the FIRST AMERICAN VEGETARIAN CONVENTION at Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, from August 2lst to 27th. Your program of action is ambitious, but rightly so, for with teamwork and the fine enthusiasm you bring to all your undertakings it will be fulfilled. And believe me, we all look forward to sharing in your fight against materialism and the many evils of our modern civilisation, and will strain every sinew with you to help establish a fairer way of life. BE strong in the knowledge that, whatever your Senators and Representatives may think to the contrary, YOU are the leaders of your Nation. Your personal example and devotion to the cause of vegetarianism will be a flaming torch, and will light the way to Freedoms far greater than those dreamed of by politicians - Freedom for the body to enjoy perfect health, Freedom of the mind from traditional thought, and Freedom to soar in the realms of the Spirit - for vegetarianism is not an end in itself but part of a new way of life. If you can achieve a balanced propaganda and work harmoniously, each in his natural sphere, the scientist tolerating the mystic, the naturopath and compost gardener not unmindful of the value of ethics, then your cause will prosper. Every good wish from,
