Vegans and vegetarians don't have to eat at special restaurants. However, if you're getting tired of ordering that Lo Hon Rice or trying to work out which dishes are suitable, then you'll be glad to know that Hong Kong has many restaurants suitable for vegans. The majority are, of course, Chinese restaurants, often with Buddhist connections and are thus also frequented by monks. Such restaurants can be found all over Hong Kong. Most of the food should be vegan and those containing eggs are usually labelled on the menu (in Chinese, anyway). You can always ask. Most of the other suitable restaurants fall into the categories of Western and Indian cuisine. Listed below is just a small selection of vegan-friendly restaurants and shops.

The letter R indicates a particularly recommended restaurant and the letter V a vegetarian restaurant. Chinese vegetarian restaurants usually serve vegan food only.

Although not that cheap, the food is highly recommended as there is a wide variety and it's not as greasy as usual. The staff are also very friendly. This and the restaurant of the same name in Vancouver are owned by the same Hong Kong star.

Large menu consisting of lots of dishes, rice noodles, ho-fun, udon, noodles in soup, congee. Dim sum is available for take-away. Buffet starts from 6pm - $98 for adults at the Jordan branch, and $70 ($80 at weekends and on public holidays) at the North Point branch. An even cheaper buffet (about $35) starts at 3pm - very cheap, but make sure you're there on time as the more popular food like the steamed dumplings disappears within seconds.

The foodcourts within the city'super shop have various ethnic restaurants with a surprisingly wide vegan choice. You can try vegetarian set meals, samosas or veggie cutlets at Curry-in-a-Hurry. One Japanese foodstall offers grilled vegetables. Mundo Latino has a collection of salads with couscous, pasta, etc and does a veggie patty setmeal, although you have to make sure that the soup of the day is vegetarian and that fruit salad is available. And you have a Chinese vegetarian stall where you can have dim sum snacks, congee and stir-fried noodles. There are some curries and veggies at Moment Thai.

Definitely one of the best health food shops and one which comes anywhere near those found in UK, USA. There's a huge variety of imported foodstuffs and toiletries suitable for vegans. It's a shame that this shop is hidden upstairs in an inconspicuous building. Located halfway between Sheung Wan and Central MTR stations.
