This is about mail-list 'netiquette' and will be sent to all IVU lists from time to time. All or part of it might be sent directly to individuals who do not seem to be reading it...
1. Quoting
When replying to a post please quote enough of the previous message to make sense of your reply, but you should delete as much as possible to
keep your own post short. The general rule is not to quote any more than you write yourself. Large amounts of quoted text can be extremely
annoying, especially for digest users.
2. Subjects
Please read the subject line when replying, if you change the topic of discussion in the course of your reply then please change the subject
line to reflect this. Many people do not have sophisticated filtering and rely on the subject line to prioritise reading their mail.
3. Private conversations
There are a lot of people on most IVU lists, over 100 in some cases. Please do not use the list to send a message to one person. Change the address and reply privately.
4. Crossposting
Do not crosspost (or cc) posts to any other address. Anything sent to a list should only be sent to the one address, if you want to send the
same message elsewhere it must be sent separately. Crossposting can cause big problems when someone tries to reply to a crossposted message.
5. Attachments
Do not send attachments of any sort to lists. All posts must be in plain simple text only.
- Whatever format you use for an attachment there will be people who will not be able to access it.
- Some attachments can contain viruses, never open one unless you are confident of the source.
6. Long articles
Please do not re-post long articles to any IVU list.
- If the article is on a website consider posting the URL where everyone can find it.
- If it was requested then send it privately to the person requesting it.
- before sending it anywhere consider the copyright implications, you will be personally liable for any infringement, not the list owners.
7. Links
When referring to a link on a website, please include http:// - not just www. - as many mail programs allow users to click directly on that to go to the web page (maybe one day they'll learn to read www...).
8. List options
Go to: ivu-mail-lists - for a link to control all your subscription options.
9. Please keep this message somewhere for future reference, or you can find it at: http://www.ivu.org/ivumail/netiquette.html
