Dining Club news & dates

Open to vegetarians, vegans and those not veggie but interested in learning how to 'eat out' veggie. The Dining Club is an ideal opportunity to meet up, socialize and enjoy eating out at a variety of restaurants, bars and pubs. Each month any LHVeg group member can put forward their choice of venue and it will be listed on the web site.

If any member would like to organize a veggie social or fundraising event and would like us to help promote it – do please get in touch.

Below are some reviews of local pub & restaurants. We would strongly recommend you to phone in advance for opening times as they can vary. Any member who has updated knowledge on the places listed below or would like to add to this list - please send an email/letter with the details to Julia.

If you like the idea of a vegetarian McDonalds then you will love this place. It's double cheeseburger and fries are the real thing in fast food American style - only veggie. Most of the menu can be made suitable for Vegans. Other choices are fried vegetables sticks with various dips, Jamaican roll, ChilliVeg, NoName Nuggets, Falafel and much more. They have a range of soft drinks and are Licensed. You can sit in and eat or take away - either way you'll go back for more. Child friendly. A good place anytime of the day or evening to take the whole family.

The George Pub, 5 Trafalgar Street, Brighton, BN1 4EO. Tel: 01273 681055 Fax: 01273 696752. Pub open: 12.00 - 11.00 pm every day (10.30 pm on Sunday). Food served 12.00 - 9.30 pm Monday - Thursday, 12.00 -8.30 pm Friday & Saturday, 12.00 - 6.00 pm Sunday. (6.30 pm - 9.00 pm Sunday - Tapas menu only).
The George is a friendly unique pub which is Vegetarian Society approved and is an easy 10-minute walk downhill from the rail station. There are also fee-paying car parks nearby. The George uses only eco-friendly products and recycles all waste. They also sell Vegetarian guides for Britain and abroad. It has a beer garden, and within the pub there are smoking/non-smoking areas. The atmosphere is very friendly and relaxed. The George has a very extensive menu and is about 70% Vegan. All the dishes are clearly marked Vegetarian or Vegan and whether spicy. There is a children's menu for the under-12s. Sunday lunchtime has its own menu which always includes a nut roast. The weekday menu ranges from bangers and mash in a red wine & onion gravy (it's delicious!) to salads and dishes from the printed menu along with daily specials on the blackboard. As there is not much call for desserts there is often only one available; however it is very tasty and homemade and can be made vegan. There is a good stock of organic wines and beers. All the hot drinks made with Soya milk are fair-trade brands. If you are looking for a real Vegetarian pub which serves tasty food this place is well worth a visit or two! The George gives 10% discount to members of the Vegetarian Society, Vegan Society, Animal Aid, Peta and bearers of Di's Guide (see bottom of this page for details). Members of Viva! receive 25% discount (because it is a Brighton-based vegetarian group).

Terre á Terre, 71 East Street, Brighton, BN1 1HQ. Tel: 01273 729051. Open: 12.00 - 10.30 pm every day except Monday when it's 6.00 pm - 10.30 pm.
In 2001 Terre á Terre was voted best Vegetarian restaurant by the Vegetarian Society. The emphasis on producing freshly-cooked gourmet dishes makes it, in our opinion, one of the finest examples of gourmet Vegetarian food around. The dishes are innovative, often unpronounceable and a delight to the eyes. However this comes at a price and Terre á Terre is by far the most expensive restaurant in Di's guide. A three-course meal for two with a bottle of the house wine is around £50.00 but well worth it for a special occasion. The lunch menu is also extensive so it is a good place to go if you want to impress your business acquaintances. The restaurant has recently been enlarged, with smoking and non-smoking areas. It is simply but attractively furnished. Many of the dishes are suitable for Vegans. Booking in advance is advisable for lunch and essential for the evening.
