Minutes of a meeting of the International Council of I.V.U. held
at the Movenpick Hotel, Edwin-Scharff-Haus, Silcherstrasse 40, Neu-Ulm,
West Germany, on Satturday 11th and Sunday,12th July, 1981.
Reports from Regional Secretaries: North America - Reports have been
received from Mr Jay Dinshah and Mr Brian Graff. There is a large number
of local societies throughout the United States and Canada. Many are
affiliated to I.V.U. through the North American Vegetarian Society.
N.A.V.S. has had a number of changes over the past few years which have
caused a number of problems but these are now being overcome and new
growth is looked for.

Regional Secretaries Reports - North America: Mrs Pat Takacs reported
on behalf of Mr Brian Graff, the regional secretary, who was not able
to attend the Congress. She reminded participants of the Congress which
had been held in Maine in 1975. It was hoped the 1984 World Congress
would be held in the United States. A large number of vegetarian groups
now existed in the U.S.A. and Canada and interest in vegetarianism and
animal welfare is growing.

at the University of Maryland, Catonsville, U.S.A. on the 9th and 10th
July, 1983
Present: . . .Mr. Brian Graff (Reg. Sec. for North America),
Mr. Brian Graff raised the question of the theme for the 1984 Congress.
It was agreed that this should be "Animal Rights and Non-Violence".

c) Publicity: Mr. Graff reported the arrangements for both national
and local publicity. It was emphasised that transport authorities should
be fed information about the Congress so that people arriving at railway
stations and airports might obtain relevant information.

Present: Mr B. Graff ; Mr. Graff commented on the growth of vegetarianism
in North America and the growing number of groups.

Regional Secretaries' Reports
North America: Mr Brian Graff reported the rapid growth of interest in
vegetarianism as concern grew over the treatment of animals and medical
problems caused by meat. The number of societies was growing and activity
was encouraging.

in behalf of Mr Brian Graff. He mentioned the hopes for the development
of activity in North America and the way in which concern was growing
over the treatment of animals.
