22nd World Vegetarian Congress 1973 - Ronneby Brunn, Sweden, report from The Vegetarian (UK)

Gérman Alberti Vasquez, President of the Sociedad Naturista de Venezuela, and Secretary General of the Federacion Naturista Latino-Americana, reported swiftening interest in vegetarianism in all Latin American countries - in Mexico City alone there are 15 flourishing vegetarian restaurants. The move towards vegetarianism is specially marked among the young people.

8. Proposed International Congress in Chile 1981
The General Secretary reported a request from German Alberti that the regional congress for South America to be held in 1981 should be recognised as a World International Congress. It was felt the International Council should not alter the decision made at the International Congress in Loughborough so the proposal could not be supported. It was suggested that Mr Alberti should submit an application for a future International Congress in South America.

9. Proposed University of Natural Medicine
The General Secretary reported a request from Dr Alberti for support for a university of natural medicine in Latin America. It was decided that there is no possibility of financial aid from I.V.U. Advice about the possibility of such a university might be obtained from established health clinics and it might be possible to speak about the proposal at the next International Congress.

6. World Congress 1984
It was agreed that 1984 should be the year when the next World Congress should take place.
A suggested venue for the Congress was Israel and a further offer was made by Dr Alberti of Venezuela of some other venue in South America. It was agreed that the final decision would be made by the next World Congress in 1982 but that those wishing to be considered should come with firm proposals.

[following discussions about IVU publications] Dr Alberti offered to produce any publications on his printing press in Spanish.

13. Reports from Regional Secretaries
a) Latin America - Dr Alberti reported that 5 Congresses had taken place since 1972 in his region and that the Latin American Vegetarian Federation had been set up to co-ordinate activities and to represent I.V.U. in the region.
Venezuela had been chosen as headquarters for the organisation and Dr Alberti is Executive Secretary for the region.
A Congress will take place in Santiago, Chile in late 1981. Eleven countries have Societies or groups of Societies which are members of the Latin American Federation.

14. 1984 World Congress - The General Secretary reported the current situation. Venezuela, Israel and the U.S.A. had been suggested for the 1984 Congress. Dr Alberti felt that Venezuela would not be possible for 1984. The decision about the venue for 1984 was referred to the General Assembly with a recommendation that the offer by the N.A.V.S. for the United States in late July or early August should be accepted.

Minutes of the General Meeting of representatives of member societies held at various times during the 27th World Congress at the University of Maryland, Catonsville, U.S.A., 30th July to 9th August, 1984.

Latin America Dr German Alberti reported the growing interest in vegetarianism and that the numbers of vegetarian societies continued to grow, The health advantages of vegetarianism were attracting many people and vegetarian restaurants were growing in number. Many states in Latin America have economic problems and this reduces the numbers able to attend Congresses.

MINUTES OF MEETINGS OF THE INTERNATIONAL COUNCIL OF I.V.U. HELD AT VARIOUS TIMES DURING THE WORLD CONGRESS OF I.V.U. AT THE CROATIA HOTEL, CAVTAT, YUGOSLAVIA FROM 25th MARCH TO 3rd APRIL, 1986

Members expressed concern at the absence of any Mexicans or the Regional Secretary for Latin America to give a report on plans for the 1988 World Congress. It was agreed to ask Joaquin Him to telephone Mexico and Dr German Alberti to obtain some information and to further consider the matter when such-information had been received.

12. 1988 World Congress continued - The responses to the telephone calls by Mr Him were discussed. Due to the concern about the lack of information and firm plans it was agreed that the Hon. General Secretary should respond to the letter coming from Mexico and indicate the need for information to be provided regularly.
In addition, it was agreed-that a visit should be paid to Mexico to seek contact with the Congress organisers and to obtain firm information about their plans. It was agreed that Mr Francisco Martin should join Mr Lee on the visit and that Dr German Alberti should be asked to attend as well if at all possible. Members were asked to send their suggestions for a checklist of questions that would need answering in Mexico to Mr Lee.

It was agreed that Mr Francisco Martin should accompany the Hon. General Secretary on his visit to Mexico should Dr German Alberti not be able to attend.

Dr Alberti proposed that Mr Lee should take the chair and this was agreed.
10. Congress 1988 matters - All aspects of the venue, the accommodation, catering, programme, publicity, responsibilities, dates etc. were discussed during several meetings with the Mexican organisers and various agreements were made. Hotel accommodation was inspected and approved. Emphasis on regular and frequent communication was agreed by all and the organisers stated that they would answer promptly. A possible I.V.U. loan of $2,500 if necessary was agreed.
