Minutes of Meetings of The International Council
(formerly the Executive Committee)

1950, October 22

Minutes of Executive Meeting held at the Grand Hotel, Manchester, at 2.30pm on the 22nd October 1950.

PRESENT
Mr.W.A.Sibly in the chair, Mr.Oluf Egerod (Hon.Secretary), Mr.James Hough, (Vice President) and Mr H.H.Jones (Acting Secretary).

CONGRESS of 1953 - SWEDEN
Mr.Egerod reported fully upon a suggested programme, submitted by Mr.Pederson, for the next congress fixed at Sigtuna, N.W. of Stockholm, Sweden.

The general arrangements were approved subject to amendment in one or two details.

THE DATE OF THE CONGRESS - 9th -16th AUGUST 1953 was suggested on account of catering difficulties in Sweden at an earlier period, but the opinion was expressed that August was a difficult month for several members of the Union and that a date in June or July would be much better if this were possible.

PROPAGANDA MEETING
The idea of having a big propaganda meeting, to be addressed by prominent speakers, was considered excellent, but it was strongly emphasised that five speakers were too many for such a meeting and that 8pm to 11pm was too long if an effective result were to be achieved. Two hours were considered to be a more acceptable period.

LECTURES
It was suggested that there should be a lecture inserted in the programme for Monday (at 3.00pm).

A recommendation was made that there should be at least one lecturer of international repute included in the programme. A suggestion was put forward that Dr.Frank Wokes, Director of Research at Ovaltine Laboratories, and a life vegetarian might be asked.

It was agreed to recommend that all speeches and lectures be printed beforehand in both English and German and translated for the press.

RESOLUTIONS FOR SUBMISSION TO THE CONGRESS
Witha view to saving time during the actual Congress it was suggested that all resolutions from Constituent Societies should be sent to the Secretary of the Union on a fixed date pior to the commencement of the Congress.

SECRETARYSHIP OF THE I.V.U.
The following applicants for the post of Secretary to the Union were carefully considered -
Baker, Ivan (St.Albans)
Battersby, J.L. (Southport)
Just, Emil (Bournemouth)
Morgan H.L. (Christchurch, Kent)
Shrigley Mrs.E.B. (Croydon)
Smith, Rennie (Clitheroe, Lancs)
Trueman, Kenneth (London - N.B. - to be kept confidential)
Walker, Roy (London)
Walker, Hanworth (Rainhill, Lancs)

Having regard to all the circumstances involved it was unanimously resolved -

That, subject to the confirmation of Mrs.Gasque, Mr.Hanworth Walker of Rainshll, Lancashire, be appointed Secretary of the Union at a salary of £600 per annum, to be raised by annual increments of £50 to £750 as the work develops. Termination of the appointment to be subject to three months notice on either side. The Secretary to work under the direction of and subject to the conditions laid down by the I.V.U. Executive Committee, an office in London to be opened as early in the New Year as may be practicable.

APPLICATION OF GERMAN SOCIETIES
An application for affiliation to the I.V.U. was submitted from Dr.JVR Ernst Waag on behalf of the Vegetarier-Union Deutschland.

Having regard to the favourable report submitted by Mrs.A.Sorge, following her investigations into the status of this Society, and the subsequent support of Mrs.Gasque, it was agreed to accept the V.U.D. (Vegetarier-Union Deutschland) as a member of the I.V.U.

It was also resolved to accept as a member of the Union, subject to compliance with the conditions of the I.V.U. the German Youth Ring, at present under the leadership of Jurgen W.Netzband, of Kronberg, (Ta....), Hessen.

A letter was read from Jurgen W.Netzband relative to the disunity among the various societies in Germany ans suggesting a ballot among vegetarians throughout Germany.

In view of the recent truce betweenn the two pricipal German Societies and the unwisdom of I.V.U. interference in German domestic differences it was agreed to inform Mr.Netzband that the action he suggests would not be desirable.

CONSTITUTION OF THE I.V.U. It was agreed that amendment of the Constitution of the I.V.U. was desirable in many respects and that suggested alterations be submitted for consideration of the Executive Committee. The suggested new Constitution could then be circulated to members prior to tis acceptance by the General Assembly in Sweden in 1953.

CENTRAL INSTITUTE IN HOLLAND Letters were submitted from Mr.van Nederveen and Mr.T.Hagtinius, (Holland), relative to the work of the Central Institute at Haarlem and of its co-operation with the I.V.U.

Whilst viewing the suggestions with sympathy, time did not permit of full consideration of the possibilities envisaged and the matter was therefore deferred until the next meeting of the Executive Committee.
