Report from the Honorary Secretary

to: Officers, Principal Correspondents and Affiliated Societies

Dear Friends,

Following the termination of Mr.Hanworth Walker's employment as paid secretary of the International Vegetarian Union, I have been asked by the President, Mrs Clarence Gasque, to act as Honorary Secretary for the time being, so that the work will not lapse.

My appointment has since received the approval of Messrs W.A.Sibly, J.Hough and G.L.Rudd who were asked by the last I.V.U. Executive Committee to find an Honorary Secretary.

I trust that, in this difficult situation, I may have your kind co-operation. It is understood, of course, that the arrangement will be re-considered at the next General Meeting of the I.V.U. In the meantime Mrs Gasque has generously agreed to maintain the Offices at 24, Binney Street, London, W.I.

May I assure you of my desire to help the International Vegetarian Union in every possible way. I shall be most grateful to have your news for publication in order to keep our contacts up to date with developments.

Yours sincerely
Harry Harris
Honorary Secretary

Minutes of the Executive Committee Meeting held on the 27th, September 1957 at the I.V.U. offices, 24 Binney Street, London W.1.

Present :- Messrs W.Arthur Sibly, Geoffrey L.Rudd, Woodland Kahler and Harry Harris (Hon.Gen.Sec) Mr.W.A.Sibly was elected Chiarman; and the notice convening the Meeting was read and approved. It was agreed that the notice of the Executive Committee Meeting was called in accordance with the Constitution; and that therefore the Meeting was legal and valid.

The absence of Mrs Gasque (President) was regretted, and it was reported that she was in a London Hospital with a knee injury, and so unable to attend.

Apologies for absence were received from: - Mr.Josef Pedersen, Mr Oluf Egerod, Dr Scott Nearing, Mr James Hough, Dr Jean Nussbaum, Mr Aldo Capitini and Frau Ecker-Lauer.
Mr Hough and Frau Ecker-Lauer both sent resignations from the Executive Committee which were noted with regret; and these were to be forwarded to the next full congress for acceptance.

A letter was read from Dr Nussbaum, complaining that the meeting was not constitutionally called, but it was unanimously agreed that the meeting had been properly called on instructions from two members of the Executive Committee; and the President had been duly notified before the notices were sent out.

It was agreed that Mr Egerod's written power of attorney to Mr Harris and Mr Hough's representation by Mr Rudd be recognised.

Minutes of previous meetings were read by the Secretary and approved.

Minutes of the 1955 Congress meetings were read by the Secretary and approved.

Minutes of the Executive Committee Meeting of 30th June 1956 were read confirmed and signed.

The Income and Expenditure Account for the year ended 31st December 1956, signed by the Honorary Auditors, was approved and accepted. The Assistant Treasurer reported that there was a balance of £1140 in the bank; and Mr Pedersen reported by letter that he had about £76 in the bank.

It was unanimously agreed that in view of the spledid work done by Mr.Harry Harris during the past fifteen months in successfully re-establishing the I.V.U. in all parts of the world, he be asked to continue as Honorary Secretary for the time being, and be given an honorarium of £500 for his work during the last half of 1957. Miss Edna Harris was appointed assistant until the end of 1957.

It was agreed that Mr W.A.Sibly, the Past President, and Mr Harry Harris, the General Secretary, should attend the Indian Congress, and that any other members of the Executive Committee also attending the Congress should equally have the status of delegate of the I.V.U.

It was unanimously agreed that the German Congress should be held in 1958 - the Jubilee year of the I.V.U. - if the German organization could make the necessary arrangements in time, as it was felt that it was a fine opportunity of making a stir to celebrate the 50th birthday of I.V.U. It was thought that Konstanz might be a suitable place; and the Secretary was asked to communicate immediately with the three organizers responsible for the German Congress. September was known as not being a convenient time for delegates and it was felt therefore that late July or early August was preferable.

The question of the notice to quit the offices was discussed, and the General Secretary was asked to make the best arrangements he could with the Landlord.

It was unanimously agreed that the offices be transferred, for the time being to 5 Lydford Road, Willesden Green, London N.W.2., Telephone WILlesden 0096, and that the new address be advertised in the next issues of World Forum, The Vegetarian, and Vegetarian News.

The Executive Committee expressed its deep sympathy with the President in her indisposition, and wished to place on record its appreciation of her greta services, and its hope for her speedy and complete recovery.
