MEETINGS OF THE INTERNATIONAL VEGETARIAN UNION EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE held at Paris: 24-26 April 1964

MINUTES

PRESENT The Marquis de St.Innocent (President) in the Chair, Herr Hiller, Mrs James, Dr G Latto, Dr Nussbaum, Pastor Skriver, Mr Vinkenborg.

MINUTES of the previous meeting in Holland (10 November) 1963 were approved and signed.

TREASURER Mr Lightowler having stated that he had not really wished to be appointed at the Barcelona Congress and having written asking to be released his resignation was accepted with regret. Mrs Isobel James agreed to be treasurer until the next Congress.

AFFILIATION The applicatons were approved of

INTERNATIONLA FEDERATION FOR PUBLIC HEALTH Although sympathetic towards the objects if this new Swiss group it was felt that the time was not opportune for the IVU to take an active part in its work. The General Secretary said he would keep in touch with it.

IVU BADGE Suggestions from Mr Hartal of Germany were considered but since only Societies could be Members of the IVU a badge was not thought to be appropriate.

FRENCH VEGETARIAN MOVEMENT Dr Nussbaum reported the situation in France where the are a number of independent groups. It was suggested that the President might seek the advice and co-operation of Mr Dextriet.

PORTUGUESE VEGETARIAN MOVEMENT The President, having spoken with Professor Cabral (Vice President), explained the situation in Portugal and it was agreed that the Portuguese Vegetarian Society might nominate another Vice President to represent the new group.

LETTERS from Mr Nielsen (Norway) and Dr Robinson (Israel) were read and discussed. The points raised were noted though it was agreed that many were not within the resources of the IVU and others were not relevant.

CIRCULARS The General Secretary showed copies of the duplicated reports and article (written by the President) which had been sent to Societies and magazine editors since the last meeting. The President was thanked for an excellent article which was reported to have been published in several countires.

WORLD CONGRESS 1965 ENGLAND The Secretary said he would be issuing an appeal at the May Meetings of the British Vegetarian Societies for fiancial support for the Congress and that the IVU had about £700 at the present time.

It was agreed that a major lecture should be 40 minutes with about 15 minutes for questions and discussion; that two might be held in a morning and two in an evening.

It was agreed that a different denomination should be responsible for the short religious service each morning and that the time might include a short explanation of the group's aims and objects.

Possible speakers were discussed and the following suggestions were made to enable the General Secretary to draw up a tentative programme and issue invitations to give lectures on various aspects of vegetarianism.

Economics - Dr Ralph Bircher
Plantmilk - Dr Alan Stoddard
Medical Discoveries substatiating vegetarianism - various doctors who would be present, with perhaps a Medical Brains Trust.
Surgery and Vegetarianism - Dr Conrad Latto
Fallacies in Diet - Dr Jean Nussbaum
Ethcs and Humanitarianism - The President, Mrs Rukmini Devi Arundale, Father Wrighton
Animal Welfare - Prof Hofstra of Leyden (to be approached by Mr Vinkenborg)
Vegetarianism in Germany or other subject - Mr Hiller, in Spain or other subject Dr Ferandiz, perhaps others when it is known who will be present.
Vegetarian Youth Movement - speakers of their own choosing in a special session.
Veganism The Vegan Society to be asked to provide its best lecturer on the subject.
International Cookery various countries to present a dish
Womens Sessions - open Parliament for general discussion on a chosen subject.
Entertainments and music and other items were also discussed.

NEXT CONGRESS 1967 In case no suitable invitations were forthcoming the President undertook to enquire if Switzerland would be interested in having a Congress.

NEXT COMMITTEE MEETING It was agreed to meet in Manchester, Englan over the weekend of 30, 31 October and 1 November 1964
