INTERNATIONAL VEGETARIAN UNION

Minutes of the International Council meeting of I.V.U. at 09.30 hrs. on Tuesday 28th August 1979 in Room J.130 of the Edward Herbert Building of the University of Technolofy, Loughborough, Leicestershire, England, U.K.

1. Chairman's greetings from Dr.Latto

2. Apologies for absence :- Mr Woodland Kahler; Prof Scott Nearing; Lic.German Alberti Vasquez; Mr.W.M.Capper. Noted.

3. Decease reported of Mr.Carlos Becerra Idmas (Hon.Reg.Sec for Latin America) in a motor accident; Mr Jack Lucas (former Hon.Sec of SCIVU); Mr Leonard Lasky (USA) Congress lecturer. It was agreed 2 minutes silence would be observed for these 3 colleagues at the IVU General Meeting.

4. Minutes of the two meetings held in India: at Delhi - 21st Nov. and at Bombay on 10th Dec. 1977 confirmed and the meeting at "Parkdale" VSUK on Oct 1978 for Congress Progress noted.

5. Matters arising from these Minutes were discussed and it was agreed that Mr.Gunn-King would invite the Ex-Premier of India Mr.Moraji Desai to become an Hon.Fellow of IVU, if Congress confirmed.

6. The General Secretary's and H0on.Treasurer's Reports were noted and sent on to Congress as were the Hon.Regional Secretary's and Treasurer's reports.

7.Election of Officers:- Mr Gunn-King announced his resignation as Hon.Gen.Sec also Herr Geo Hiller as Deputy President; Senor Instegui and Senor Bueno of Spain resigned as Council Member and Hon.V.P. respectively. Mrs Eikeboom-Broekman offered to resign but agreed to withdraw this later.
Proposals were put forward for Hon.Fellows:- Shri Moraji Desai, Smt.R.Devi Arundale; Smt.M.D.Malemgamvala, Shri Somali.
Hon.Vice Presidents:- Shri Jhaveri, Shri T.M.P.Mahadevan, Shri Shantilal Mehta.
Exec V-P Mr Gunn-King (as proposed by U.V.Soc)
Mr C.D.Fettes to replace Councillor I.Wilson as Hon.Reg.Sec for Europe
Mr G.Karolyi to replace Mr B.Standish for Australasia; Mr Alberti G.Vasquez to be Hon.Corr.Reg.Sec for Latin America in place of Mr C.Becerra Idmas.

After 2 lengthy sessions Mr.Maxwell G.Lee was elected Hon.Gen.Sec. of IVU and Mr Amarjeet Singh Bhamra as Hon.Asst.Gen.Sec.
The rest of the proposals were passed to Congress.

8. RESOLUTIONS:- It was agreed that the minimum annual subscription should be raised to £5.00 sterling per year (as from 1st March 1980) up to 150 Members and thereafter up to £10 per vote up to a maximum of 10 votes for every succeeding group of 500 members. Associate Membership should rise to a minimum of £7.50 per year. A new class of Patrons (for life) should be established at £50.00 each to be placed on a "list of honour". The Hon.Gen Sec's quarterly allowance for sundry office expenses would be raised from £35.00 to £45.00. All financial provisions to go forward for confirmation by Congress.

9. Venues for the 26th World Vegetarian Congress:- W.Germany; Canada, Japan and Latin America considered and passed forward to Congress.

10. Mr C.D.Fettes * Mr H.J.Dinshah proposed that simultaneous translation be guaranteed to any linguistic group exceeding 30 (thirty) in number whose members pay the next Congress Registration Fee not less than six months in advance - to go forward to Congress as a resolution.

11. Any other business. Mr Gunn-King read out report from VEGFAM showing how the Congress donation from Maine University in 1975 was used to feed poor children in India and Bangladesh. Display supplements from Mr H.J.Dinshah (NAVS) for IVU news were as agreed at the 24th Congress.

Applications for membership of IVU were considered from TEVA; Waerland-Bund (W.Germany); The Vegan Soc of Victoria (Australia) and the Canadian Vegetarian Society.
