Dr. George Jacobs
President of the Vegetarian Society of Singapore

IVU should continue its efforts to serve as an umbrella organisation for local, national, regional and international organisations that promote vegetarianism. We are doing this via our website, our RCs, our electronic newsletter and our congresses. Interest in vegetarianism seems to be increasing, as the reasons for vegetarianism - be they health, environmental, kindness towards our fellow animals or other reasons - gain evidence and momentum. IVU should continue to allow our affiliated organisations to play the central role in promoting vegetarianism. IVU can be a kind of clearinghouse for information and ideas. We should try to play this role in a manner that is unifying, not divisive, a manner which promotes harmony among vegetarian activists.

Tina Fox
Company Secretary, Vegetarian for Life (UK)

I have been a member of the IVU council since my election in Thailand in January 1999. Shortly after election and I became the membership secretary and in 2000 at the World Vegetarian Congress in Toronto I was elected Deputy Chair and am currently Chair, elected at the World Vegetarian Congress in July 2002 in Edinburgh which I organized.

I have been involved in the vegetarian, animal rights and green movements since 1972 when I first became vegetarian and was local contact for many animal rights groups. I also wrote the Green Party UK’s animal rights policies.

I was employed as Chief Executive of the Vegetarian Society UK from May 1995 to the end of July 2006 and am now employed part time as the company secretary of a new charity, Vegetarian for Life, which aims to help older vegetarians and vegans. ( www.vegetarianforlife.org.uk)

I wish to “ move over” from  my position as Chair and let someone else take the helm as I feel I have held the position long enough  but I still feel that I have something to offer the council if I am required.

Miguel Facal
Co-founder, Union Vegetariana y Vegana del Uruguay

After a new period honoured as Councilor, I feel here, there are many things to do in our region, Latin America.

In these two years, we have stronger interactivity and contact between countries of the area, and with our Regional Coordinator, Marly Winckler, we could go ahead promoting vegetarianism in a region with many difficulties.

My main work was to be a nexus between Portuguese speaking area (Brazil, the best developed country about vegetarianism here) and the rest of Latin America ( that is Spanish speaking). We have much to learn about SVB example.

Regional and local congresses also helped in a great way to achieve that aims, but I think so much is to do. So I ask you to vote another period for me, for working and doing my best , for IVU objetives and for the progress of vegetarianism all over the world and specialy in those countries where it is not too much developed.

Thanks you all for these past years.
Miguel Facal

David Roman
President, Union Vegetariana Espanola (Spanish Vegetarian Union)

My name is David Roman. Vegetarian since 1989 and vegan since 1996, I am currently the president of the Spanish Vegetarian Union. Our society is aiming to promote vegetarianism in our country, urging our members to act locally as well as nationwide.

We publish a bi-annual magazine for our members, and have organized by now 3 national congresses and 2 meetings, which have been very successful and encouraging for the participants.

I'm also the author of several books about vegan issues, very innovative and educational in the Spanish context.

Regarding IVU, since 1998 I've been a collaborator and have been in charge of the Spanish section of the website, coordinating our team of translators. Afterwards I was appointed as Deputy Webmaster to support the excellent work of John Davis. I have also supported and counseled several vegetarian groups in Latin America.

In 2004, I was proudly coopted for the IVU International Council and in 2006 was elected to the Council, and now I would be very pleased to be reelected and keep on contributing with my efforts to the progress of the vegetarian ideas worldwide.

For a vegetarian future,
David Roman, May, 2008

Saurabh Dalal
President of the Vegetarian Society of the District of Columbia, USA

Saurabh Dalal’s key hopes for IVU are: to position IVU to be a recognized voice for responsibility and sustainability on the international level (e.g. representation at global conferences/summits, governmental forums, meetings of global/regional NGOs); to more fully support IVU's role of establishing new vegetarian organizations in strategic parts of the world as well as bolstering existing ones to have greater impact; and to establish strong ties with national/international media to promote groups and the global benefits of vegetarianism.

Saurabh lives in the Washington DC area, enjoys outreach, education, and advocacy of veganism and non-violence as compelling solutions to many global problems (considering this his life’s passion), and has lectured regularly.  He has been President of the Vegetarian Society of DC since 1996, Deputy Chair of IVU from 2004-present, volunteers in various capacities with many other like-minded non-profit groups, and is highly team-oriented.  A follower of the Jain religion, he has been active in the Jain community on the local and international levels.  He is a lifelong vegetarian and vegan since 1991.  Saurabh works as a Program Manager in information technology, holds graduate degrees in Physics and Electrical Engineering, and endeavors to bring sound science into the vegetarian and related movements.

Professor Paula Brügger

My name is Paula Brügger. I am a professor in the Department of  Ecology and Zoology, Santa Catarina Federal University, Brazil, where I teach 'Biosphere, Sustainability and Productive Processes; Environment and Development; and Management of Sustainability in the Knowledge Society'.  I have done my graduate studies in Biology and my  Master's degree in Education. My PhD is in Human Sciences - Environment and Society.

I wrote two books on environmental education 'Educação ou adestramento ambiental?' (1994; 1999; 2004' 3rd edition) and 'Amigo Animal' (2004) where the relationship between human beings and the 'other animals' is the guiding line of a wider discussion about the relationship between our society and the environment. I was, for four years, member of the 'University Committee for Ethical Treatment of  Animals' (CEUA) and I have also worked on the behalf of the Federal Public Ministry against pseudo development projects - those which promote social exclusion and the destruction of natural ecosystems.

I currently coordinate the environmental education project 'Amigo Animal' offered for local public schools and the Environment Department of the Brazilian Vegetarian Society (SVB).

Best wishes,
Paula Brügger

Nominated by Sociedade Vegetariana Brasileira (Brazil Vegetarian Society)
(Paula has not previously been a member of the International Council)

Dilip Barman
President, Triangle Vegetarian Society, NC, USA

I have led for over a decade an active vegetarian society (TVS) that has succeeded in attracting significant local and national attention. Our events, including my frequent lectures and cookery classes, draw not just from "the choir" but from the large majority of people who are not vegetarian, many of whom become more interested in a plant-based diet.

I have enjoyed serving as a VUNA Councilor and have attended and presented at each IVU World Congress from 2000, except for the one in 2006, at which one I was elected to the IVU Council. I love to "Think Globally, Act Locally" - VUNA and IVU have allowed me to network with fabulous high-energy worldwide thinkers and do-ers.

Since being elected to the Council in the last election, I have been active with Council duties, being responsive to responding to as well as raising and working through policy, financial, World Congress, and other issues. I am delighted to continue to serve on Council, contributing and leveraging my passion for helping people move to plant- based lifestyles.

David Pye
Past Chairman of The Vegetarian Society UK

I have been vegetarian for over 35 years and spent 20 years as a research scientist. I am now self-employed as an IT consultant and have a Masters degree in digital media production. Over the last fifteen years I have taken a major role in setting up several UK companies and taken two of them forward to become successful local charities with over 30 employees. I am still company secretary of these two charities, which specialise in energy efficiency and organic gardening.

I joined the council of the International Vegetarian Union in 1999 and have had the honour of serving as treasurer for the past nine years. I also became a trustee of the UK Vegetarian Society in 1997 and was chair of the charity for three years. I am also a trustee of the recently formed 'Vegetarian for Life' Charity.

My area of interest is the environmental aspect of vegetarianism and I have spoken at several international congresses on this matter. This issue has become very topical in recent years especially as the environmental impact of meat production is massive and carbon production could be drastically reduced by people adopting a more vegetarian diet. It's taken a long time but environmentalists are only just wakening up to this fact and there is much work to be done.

I therefore ask the IVU membership to allow me to continue as treasurer and council member for another two years.

Dan Arbel

Our organization is the only International active vegetarian/vegan Society with almost 500 members. All meetings and lectures are held in English with translation to Hebrew.

I attend all IVU congresses.

Emmanuel Eyoh
Founder of the Nigeria Vegetarian Society & The Nigeria Animal Welfare Foundation.

I have  been a vegetarian for over 20 years. I became a vegetarian as a member of  the Hare Krishna movement and began the Food For Life programmes in Nigeria & W/Africa- which took me  to many countries in the sub-region. As the director of Food For Life, I was instrumental in establishing vegetarian outlets in Benin, Ibadan & Lagos.

I am a life member and Executive member of  the NSPCA. The NSPCA is the 1st branch of RSPCA in Africa. With recent arrangements with WSPA, I should be heading the NSPCA in Nigeria.

Since founding the NVS many years ago, I have organised several  vegetarian events in Nigeria. He have also hosted many vegetarian/animal rights leaders in Nigeria such as Dada J.P Vaswani, Keith McHenry of Food Not Bombs, Benjamin Zephaniah, Steve Chacha of WSPA etc.

I  run a Vegetarian Charity known as SEVAOUTREACH [SEVA Homeless Feeding]. The project serves free vegetarian food to  needy and homeless persons in Nigeria. In 2005 the project took a new dimension when I went to Niger Republic to serve veg food in response to the famine in that country. It was the only charity serving veg food. Since then the project has also served free veg food in Mali, Chad, Benin Republic etc.

I organise events to mark Great Meatout Day, World Farm Animals Day, Feed The World Week and annual vegetarian festival. In 2007 I organised the West Africa Vegetarian Congress and it was the 1st of its kind  in Africa.

If elected  as a member of the International Council, I  hope to help advance the vegetarian cause in Africa. I will bring hope, life, vision, passion and action to the vegetarian movement in Africa in manner it has never been done before. I publish the Vegetarian News and SEVA Magazine .I am a journalist/publisher. I am the Editor of Divine Darshan - a publication of the Indian community in Nigeria.

Nominated by the Nigeria Vegetarian Society
(Emmanuel has not previously been a member of the International Council)

Vanessa Clarke
International Coordinator for the Vegan Society UK

A graduate in modern languages from Cambridge university and a parliamentary editor by profession, I have travelled widely in Europe and Asia and seen how easily major organisations are manipulated by powerful lobby groups. We must ensure that our message is convincingly and accurately presented at all levels.

A life member of the UK Vegetarian Society and the Vegan Society's International Coordinator, I believe we have a duty to help smaller societies around the world. When previously on Council, I facilitated the first ever Maltese Vegfest. I also helped organise the Chiangmai Congress and have written and edited material for Dresden.

Recently I have been much involved with the new Indian Vegan Society and communities of Indian origin elsewhere.  Also in using human rights legislation to get animal-free medicines and foodstuffs in hospitals and care homes. It therefore seems appropriate to leave the EVU Board in good hands and return to the wider umbrella of IVU where I hope my editorial and networking experience will be useful.

On a lighter note, internationalism begins at home and I was delighted when my (entirely vegan) wedding to Dr Stephen Walsh last year was attended by friends from eight religions and fifteen nationalities.
