from IVU News
2001
Gujarat, India-After an earthquake measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale
devastated this western state of India, humanitarian agencies in cooperation
with the Indian military undertook a massive cleanup, search, and rebuild
operation.
More than 20,000 people perished and hundreds of thousands were displaced
in India's biggest natural disaster in recent history.
Food for Life, an international vegan/vegetarian food relief, sent in
volunteers from nearby Baroda and Mumbai, including a team of fifty doctors
and nurses who set up a temporary hospital for the survivors.
In addition, they provided survival kits, fresh water, clothes and more
than one million freshly cooked vegetarian meals.
In the following months, Food for Life, in cooperation with the local
government, has taken responsibility for rebuilding many small townships,
including Bhadreswar with a total population of 3,475 and an estimated
expenditure of more than 85 million rupees.
