| IVU News Congress News Still time to book the congress!Act Now!Are you coming to the World Vegetarian Congress in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, USA?Remember the dates are 29th July - 4th August this year. It is not too late to book. Have you told your members about it? If not, please do so and encourage them to come. World congresses are an experience not to be missed, not only helping you make new friends from all parts of the world, but also giving you an opportunity to update your knowledge of vegetarianism in all its aspects and to enjoy meals that are guaranteed totally vegetarian. General Secretary. Vegetarian Societies which have paid their annual subscription are allowed from 1 to 10 voting delegates depending on the number of members they have and the subscription they have paid. See below for full details. Future CongressesThe venue for world vegetarian congresses is normally decided by the meeting of member societies during a congress. They vote on the various offers made through presentations to the meeting.The decision concerns the congress to be held four years ahead. Congresses are hosted by IVU member vegetarian societies. Information about the potential of the venue, the cost of registration, meals and accommodation at rates current when the presentation is made (an allowance will be made later for inflation), possibilities for excursions and information about how the organisers will manage the event. Information about travel to the proposed venue and the types of accommodation proposed is also required. The presentation may be supported by a video or slide presentation. The next open date is the year 2,000 and a decision about this will be made during the congress this year. Elections 1996During the world congress in Johnstown there will be an opportunity for member society representatives to vote for the International Council which will run IVU until the next world vegetarian congress.Each member society has a number of votes from one to ten according to the number of members they have. The number of votes is:-
1 for up to 150
2 for 151 - 650
3 for 651 - 1150
4 for 1151 - 1650
5 for 1651 - 2150
6 for 2151 - 2650
7 for 2651 - 3150
8 for 3151 - 3650
9 for 4151 - 4650
10 for 4651 upwards
Proxy votes are not allowed so you need to have representatives present at the meeting of member societies to exercise your right to vote. Both the President, Shri Surendra Mehta, and the Deputy President, Professor Marcel Hebbelinck, have served the maximum period allowed by the Constitution in their respective positions. Member societies will need to nominate people for these two posts. The International Council is composed of the Officers and eight elected members. Member societies will elect eight people to serve on the International Council until the next world congress Nominations by member societies can be sent to the Hon. General Secretary to be received before 15th July when he will leave home for the USA. The Hon. General Secretary and Hon. Treasurer are appointed by the International Council.
