Your Guide to Vegtarian Restaurants Around the World

IVU News - March 2000

Looking for a fully vegetarian restaurant during your travels? A new website - VegDining.com - may be just what you've been searching for! Launched this past fall, VegDining.com now lists over 700 fully vegetarian establishments, covering all the continents (except of course for Antarctica but expect a veggie restaurant there sometime this Millennium!).

In addition to basic location information, our site provides details for many of the restaurants listed including type of cuisine, specialties and unique features of the restaurants, as well as directions and maps to the restaurants, credit cards accepted, reservation requirements, and more. Visitors to the site are encouraged to submit comments about their favorite vegetarian restaurants. In return, VegDining.com offers a contest featuring weekly, monthly and grand prizes - all vegetarian ! For example, since October 1 (World Vegetarian Day), we've awarded an IVU membership every week and will continue awarding memberships every week until the World Congress in Toronto. A grand prize was awarded at the end of October (World Vegetarian Month) consisting of a registration package to the World Congress. The lucky winner was Janet Gottlieb, a long-time vegetarian from Brooklyn, New York. A second grand prize to the Congress will be awarded on May 1.

VegDining.com also hosts several city-specific mailing lists for news and discussion about vegetarian dining opportunities in many of the world's major cities including London, Sydney, Hong Kong, New York, San Francisco, Toronto and many more. Restauranteurs are welcome to post news and announcements about their establishments on these mailing lists.

Although VegDining.com's mission is to promote vegetarianism around the world by promoting vegetarian restaurants, it's also deeply committed to promoting the work of grassroots vegetarian organizations. As a vegetarian activist and group organizer on the Canadian prairies, I'm proud that VegDining.com is a member of several local, national and international vegetarian groups and is an IVU business supporter.

To help support grassroots vegetarian activism, VegDining.com offers nonprofit vegetarian groups free banner ad space and a section for group announcements of upcoming events at vegetarian restaurants. It also offers special pricing on the VegDining Card and an international dining discount card to members of vegetarian groups

Thanks to all of you for helping make VegDining.com so successful. We're looking forward to meeting many of you at the World Congress in July!
