Food Allergy Survival Guide. Vesanto Melina MS RD, Jo Stepaniak MSEd and Dina Aronson MS RD. Healthy Living Publications, 382 pp, pbk, ISBN 157067163X.
This book is an essential guide to vegetarians and vegans who suffer from food allergies. Although it is an American publication, the book is a very clear and easy to use with helpful advice and the majority of recipes include ingredients that are available in the UK.
The book is split into two main parts, with chapters 1 to 8 exploring food sensitivities, the various conditions and how to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Unfortunately, it does not give references for the various statements made which makes it less appealing to members of the medical profession. Nevertheless, the nutritional information is excellent and will be a very useful resource for any professional who needs more information on managing the vegetarian/vegan who has food intolerances.
In the second part of the book, chapter 9 describes appropriate equipment to have in your kitchen and how to prepare those special meals, whilst chapter 10 is packed with over 100 well balanced and varied vegan recipes, with each recipe giving portion sizes and nutritional content. The recipes sound delicious and I am looking forward to testing them out on my vegetarian nephew who has coeliac disease! Food Allergy Survival Guide is certainly a unique and practical book.
