AA and RAC recommended hotel in Thame with a restaurant offering a separate vegetarian/vegan menu. (June 2006)
As far as we know there are only three completely vegetarian eating places in the whole of Oxfordshire. Naturally they are included here, along with a selection of eating places that cater for vegetarians and vegans, some of which have a separate vegetarian menu. Of course these are not the only eating places in Oxfordshire that cater for vegetarians. However, some of the establishments contacted during compilation of this guide chose not to provide us with the information requested, even though they have an extensive choice of vegetarian dishes, and they are not included here. So if your favourite restaurant or café is not included here please accept our apologies, and please tell us about them in case they are not known to us. We hope that you will find somewhere to suit both your tastes and your pocket below.

Health food and wholefood shops seem to be the great survivors in the retail food market. Whereas greengrocers and other independent food shops struggle to compete with the supermarket chains, health food shops appear to be holding onto a share of the market. Perhaps diversity is the key to their survival. Some health food shops specialise in nutritional supplements or allow complementary health practitioners to use their premises, whilst others sell locally grown organic fruit and vegetables or wholefoods rarely found on the supermarket shelf. (For other sources of organic fruit and vegetables readers are referred to the Miscellaneous Businesses section.) Many are run by enthusiasts, sometimes vegetarian themselves, who are happy to give advice on the use, nutritional value and content of the foods they sell. Thus, although most vegetarians generally buy the bulk of their groceries from supermarkets, the health food shop remains an important source of the more unusual items in their shopping basket.
Most towns in Oxfordshire have a health food or wholefood shop, so that the vegetarian shopper is never far from a source of quality food. Sadly, some shops chose not to provide the information requested during compilation of Vegetarian Oxfordshire: for these establishments only the name, address and telephone number are provided.
