VEGETARIAN OXFORDSHIRE

Welcome to Vegetarian Oxfordshire - our online guide to accommodation, eating places, health food and wholefood shops and miscellaneous businesses catering for vegetarians and vegans in and around Oxfordshire. The guide does not claim to be comprehensive. However, by listing a cross-section of establishments catering for vegetarians and vegans we hope to help you find somewhere suitable to stay, eat out or shop in Oxfordshire. For printed vegetarian/vegan guides to London, Britain, Europe, and several other countries and cities contact Vegetarian Guides, Ltd., PO Box 2284, London, W1A 5UH.

The guide consists of four sections: Accommodation, Eating Places, Health Food and Wholefood Shops, and Miscellaneous Businesses. Use the links below to navigate quickly to the section(s) of interest. In the first three sections the entries are arranged alphabetically according to their location with a key at the beginning of the first two sections explaining the symbols used. In the final section the businesses are listed alphabetically. Some of the businesses listed have been kind enough to offer a discount to members of Oxford Vegetarians. To view the full list of members discounts please click here, and for information on joining Oxford Vegetarians please click here.

We aim to keep Vegetarian Oxfordshire up-to-date by adding and removing entries as required. All entries are based on information provided by the establishments and businesses themselves. However, if you know of a business not included that you feel should have been (or vice-versa), or find that a listed establishment has closed down or no longer caters for vegetarians and vegans to the level claimed, or spot any errors, please send us brief details. For information on how to contact us please click here. Finally, please mention Vegetarian Oxfordshire when contacting the establishments and businesses listed below (if contacting them by email please substitute the "@" symbol for "{at}" in the email address).

Accommodation

Although this section may be of limited use to local residents, Oxfordshire, and Oxford in particular, is especially popular with tourists, many of whom need somewhere to stay. Of course, any self-respecting hotel or guest house should be able to cater for vegetarian visitors. The small number of establishments included here (only one of which is exclusively vegetarian) should be able to cater for vegetarians and vegans better than most. However, we realise that they may not appeal to all tastes, or all pockets, or that they may not be conveniently situated for you. If that is the case we recommend contacting the tourist information centre nearest to your intended destination: for Oxford this is the Oxford Information Centre, 15-16 Broad Street, Oxford OX1 3AS (tel. 01865 726871, email: tic{at}oxford.gov.uk, web: www.visitoxford.org). The Oxford Association of Hotels and Guest Houses website (www.stayoxford.co.uk) lists accommodation that has been inspected by the AA, ETC (English Tourism Council) and/or the RAC. For budget accommodation in Oxford try Oxford Youth Hostel (tel. 01865 727275, email: oxford{at}yha.org.uk, web: www.yha.org.uk) or Central Backpackers Oxford (tel. 01865 242288, email: oxford{at}centralbackpackers.co.uk, web: www.centralbackpackers.co.uk) both of which are located conveniently near to the railway and coach stations. Whatever your tastes we hope that you enjoy your stay in Oxfordshire, and that you will take the opportunity to contact Oxford Vegetarians during your visit, especially if it coincides with one of our events.

Eating Places

As far as we know there are only three completely vegetarian eating places in the whole of Oxfordshire. Naturally they are included here, along with a selection of eating places that cater for vegetarians and vegans, some of which have a separate vegetarian menu. Of course these are not the only eating places in Oxfordshire that cater for vegetarians. However, some of the establishments contacted during compilation of this guide chose not to provide us with the information requested, even though they have an extensive choice of vegetarian dishes, and they are not included here. So if your favourite restaurant or café is not included here please accept our apologies, and please tell us about them in case they are not known to us. We hope that you will find somewhere to suit both your tastes and your pocket below.

Health Food and Wholefood Shops

Health food and wholefood shops seem to be the great survivors in the retail food market. Whereas greengrocers and other independent food shops struggle to compete with the supermarket chains, health food shops appear to be holding onto a share of the market. Perhaps diversity is the key to their survival. Some health food shops specialise in nutritional supplements or allow complementary health practitioners to use their premises, whilst others sell locally grown organic fruit and vegetables or wholefoods rarely found on the supermarket shelf. (For other sources of organic fruit and vegetables readers are referred to the Miscellaneous Businesses section.) Many are run by enthusiasts, sometimes vegetarian themselves, who are happy to give advice on the use, nutritional value and content of the foods they sell. Thus, although most vegetarians generally buy the bulk of their groceries from supermarkets, the health food shop remains an important source of the more unusual items in their shopping basket.

Most towns in Oxfordshire have a health food or wholefood shop, so that the vegetarian shopper is never far from a source of quality food. Sadly, some shops chose not to provide the information requested during compilation of Vegetarian Oxfordshire: for these establishments only the name, address and telephone number are provided.

Miscellaneous Businesses

The demand for organic food and drink has grown rapidly in recent years as consumers seek more wholesome, flavourful foods and a return to a more sustainable, environment-friendly agriculture. Although some supermarkets stock an impressive range of organic foods, other organic foods and drinks remain largely the preserve of the specialist supplier. Some of these suppliers are listed here.  (For a comprehensive guide to locally produced food, including many organic food outlets, we recommend the Food Guide 2006-07 produced by the Berkshire, Buckinghamshire & Milton Keynes and Oxfordshire Food groups, available from local libraries or online at www.local-food.net .) We also include details of some complementary therapists known to us.  The entries are listed in alphabetical order.
