Famous Vegetarians - David Bailey

  • Bailey, David, Photographer, source: BBC2 programme about fashion photographers of the Sixties.
  • from independent.co.uk (readers questions Thursday, 22 May 2003) :
Is vegetarianism the secret of your eternal youth? If not, what is?
    Paula Moman, Nottingham
I think it helps. I never seem to get sick. I think the secret is that I'm just too curious about everything to give up. I've been a vegetarian since I was 11 or 12. It wasn't about animals. I think it's because I was brought up during the war, and meat wasn't really available, it seemed bizarre to want to eat flesh. Now, I've lapsed a bit because I eat fish and chicken. But if it looks like a chicken, I can't eat it. Or if the fish's head is still on, it gives me quivers.
  • from guardian.co.uk Sunday 28 April 2002 : I feel about 20 years younger than I am. I think that's down to diet; I've been a vegetarian since I was 10 and I've never drunk milk. I think that plays a big part in boosting energy levels and sorting you out emotionally.

  • from people.com September 26, 1977: Part of Bailey's own maturing since marriage is a prominent paunch. Marie's vegetarian couscous, Indian curry and banana milkshakes laced with soy flour, wheat germ and raw egg must share the blame. "I have to keep him healthy," she explains ingenuously. They enjoy wee-hour partying with old cronies—the Michael Caines, Mick Jaggers and Paul McCartneys—and getaways to the countryside in their Range Rover. (David has sold his Rolls and Ferrari.)
