Foie Gras at Jenners
Jenners is a landmark Edinburgh store on Princes St. It sells foie gras. Advocates for Animals is a long established
animal welfare organisation, headquartered in Edinburgh, which opposes the production of foie gras because of the cruel methods
used. Advocates for Animals, together with the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA), has produced a report
'Forced Feeding - An inquiry into the welfare of ducks and geese kept for the production of foie gras'.
As part of its campaign
Advocates for Animals has demonstrated outside Jenners store. South
East Scotland Vegetarians has no official position on this issue, but
members may want to consider the issue and whether they want to be involved.
".. In order to achieve the desired taste and texture, ducks and geese
are force-fed two or three times daily with up to half-a-kilo of grain
and fat.... During the force-feeding period the birds are kept permanently
in cages so small that they are unable to stand up, walk, turn around,
clean their feathers or stretch their wings properly.... Animal protection
laws in Denmark, Germany, Norway, Poland and Austria specifically prohibit
force-feeding... the main producers being France, Hungary and Bulgaria.
In 1998, over 25 million ducks and geese were raised for the production
of foie gras."
