General
Many shops selling food will sell a wide range of foods suitable for vegetarians, included specifically vegetarian foods. The big supermarkets, Sainsbury's, Safeway and Tesco, which can be found across the region all have plenty to offer.

Edinburgh
Edinburgh is well provided for. Shops especially useful include;

  • Damhead Holdings, 32A, Damhead, Old Pentland Road, Lothianburn, EH10 7EA. Map
    0131 445 5591. Open 7 days. Situated to the south of the city bypass, but easily accessible. Huge range of organic produce, most of which is vegetarian, and some vegan. Also fair trade items, and animal-friendly cosmetics and cleaning products.
  • The Engine Shed Shop, 123 Brunsfield Pl, EH10 4SQ. Map
    0131 229 6494. Sells the complete range of Engine Shed products, many organic.
  • Good Food, 255, Morningside Road, EH10 4RD.Map
    0131 452 9020. Small, family-run health food shop, which crams an amazing range of goods into a very small space.
  • Hanover Health Foods, 40, Hanover St., EH2 2DR. Map
    0131 225 4291. Primarily a health products outlet, but has some savoury snacks in a very convenient central location.
  • Henderson's Farm Shop, 92 Hanover St., EH2 1DR.Map
    0131 225 6694. Limited, but quality range of groceries. Features Henderson's own brand breads and ready meals. Some organic produce. Small range of wines.Now have a good range of takeaway snacks.
  • Holland & Barrett, Unit 3, Hanover Building, Rose St.,EH2 2NN.Map

  • Jordan Valley, 8, Nicolson St., EH8 9DH. Map
    0131 556 6928. Open 7 days. Comprehensive Mediterranean and Middle eastern deli. Features their own brand veggie and vegan cakes, flapjacks, pies and pastries, which are also widely available at independent grocers around Edinburgh.
  • Margiotta's, 77, Warrender Park Road, EH9 1ES. Map
    0131 229 2869. Open 7 days til late. Margiotta's are a chain of neighbourhood convenience stores, mainly in the student areas of Edinburgh. They all stock many vegetarian staples and snacks, and a reasonable range of vegan foods. Stock Nature's Gate, Henderson's and Jordan Valley snacks. Some wines and beers, and great chocolate! The Warrender Park Road branch is probably the best. See website for other branches.
  • Napier's Dispensary, 18, Bristo Place, EH1 1HA. 0131 225 5542. Map

    Napiers have been providing herbal remedies since 1860, and run holistic health clinics as well.
  • The New Leaf, 20 Argyle Pl., EH9 1JJ. Map
    0131 228 8840. Small independent health food store, with intelligent range of produce.Many organic and fairly traded items.
  • One World Shop, St. John's Church, Princes Street, EH2 4BJ.Map
    0131 229 4541. An Alladin's cave of fairly traded goods, just along from the Cornerstone Cafe.
  • Peckham's, 155, Bruntsfield Place, EH10 3DG. Map
    0131 229 7054. Open 7 days. Licensed until midnight, so a lifesaver if you forgot your vegan wine and beer. Astonishing range of spirits and liquours. Stocks a good range of snacks and quality chocolate, some vegan. Also stocks Swedish Glace non-dairy ice cream Now has a downstairs cafe, which has some imaginative vegetarian options.

    Open 7 days. Long-established vegan and vegetarian wholefoods. Good value bulk foodstuffs. Fresh snacks and rolls. Wide organic range. Great notice boards for accommodation, events and services.
    Broughton Street is the main store, and stocks most things you could ever need.
  • Roots Wholefoods, 60 Newington Rd., EH9 1QN. Map
    0131 668 2888. Comprehensive wholefood shop, with renowned deli counter at rear.
  • For a range of cheap, good value fruit and veg shops, the area aroung Argyl Place is recommended. Map
  • If you are ever caught short of veggie and vegan snacks in the wee small hours, the Canonmills GarageMap stocks the Nature's Gate and Jordan Valley ranges, and some Henderson's foods as well.
