Because (words from a resolution at the 1982 IVU World Vegetarian Congress):

  1. billions of our fellow animals are abused and slaughtered each year for human consumption

  2. millions of people die each year of chronic disease associated with consumption of animal flesh

  3. our soil, water, forests and other vital and largely irreplaceable natural resources are being destroyed by the insatiable demands of agriculture

  4. vegetarianism represents the only effective solution to these crucial problems that threaten our very existence
