Purpose, Potential, and Project Management

Purpose

The purpose of the project is to create a comprehensive manual that provides instructions and information about organizing and holding a vegetarian food fair. Vegetarian food fairs have already been used as successful outreach events by many vegetarian organizations. These fairs come in many shapes and sizes, and they go by a variety of names. A vegetarian food fair is any event that is held to educate the public about the benefits of a vegetarian diet by focusing on vegetarian food. The focus is on food, but the event might also highlight the relationship between a vegetarian diet and improving human health, conserving the environment, or recognizing the suffering of factory-farmed animals. These events are well received by the public and offer a unique way to bring together education and example.

Project Potential

Individuals need not belong to a large organization with extensive resources to plan and hold a successful vegetarian food fair. The VUNA manual will provide background information, trouble-shooting, and procedures for each aspect of a vegetarian food fair, making the organization of the event stepwise and straightforward. The manual will be useful for groups of all sizes and experience levels.

The key to an effective manual is input from vegetarians and vegetarian organizations interested in holding this kind of event. To cover the spectrum of organization size, purpose, and expertise, both novice and experienced groups will need to participate. The manual project has the potential to be an important part of vegetarian outreach throughout North America, making a difference in human and animal lives and the health of the environment. Please continue browsing the site and consider becoming part of this effort.

Project Management

The creation of the vegetarian food fair manual meets two needs: (1) VUNA's interest in creating a definitive organizational and planning manual for vegetarian food fairs and (2) the thesis requirements for the project manager, who, in July 2000 obtained a Master's degree in techical and scientific communication from the Institute of Technical and Scientific Communication at James Madison University. Her background is in biology and English, and her graduate study focused on document and Web design theory, science writing for the public, editing and style, and user documentation. She has worked as a medical editor and is currently a full-time editor at a university press in New York state.

The project goals are complementary: The final result will be a usable, complete manual that is ready for distribution in hard copy format or via the World Wide Web to interested organizations. To fulfill the thesis requirements, the manual was paired with visual communication theory to demonstrate how the content and design of the manual met the needs of its target audience.
