Vegetarian Food Fair Manual Draft

Part III

Section 21: Emergency troubleshooting

Unexpected changes and problems can occur at even the best-planned vegetarian food fair, so you should be prepared for emergencies even if you don't anticipate any. You might anticipate some last-minute changes in booth assignments and even a quick run to the hardware or grocery store for something that's needed to fix a display or to give a cooking demonstration.

Keep the following items handy in an easy-to-find place:

  • An emergency first aid kit
  • A fire extinguisher
  • Packing tape
  • Markers
  • Pens
  • A few pieces of posterboard
  • Extra clipboards
  • Paperweights
  • Extension cords
  • Heavy-duty string
  • Scraps of cardboard (to fix wobbly tables or chairs) [extra garbage bags; nails and a hammer; screws and a screwdriver (Phillips and flat); other miscellaneous tools]

These items may be useful if available:

  • A megaphone
  • A set of walkie-talkies
  • Tarpaulins

It's important to have all of the permits you acquired in Section 5 in case authorities ask you to produce them. You likely won't have any complaints or questions from police, but you should be prepared just in case. If you have complied with all of the regulations, you have nothing to worry about.

You should also locate the nearest telephone in case of an emergency or find out whether a volunteer might have a cellular telephone that you could use for the day. Volunteers at the welcoming table or at your organization's booth should keep the phone so that participants, attendees, and volunteers can find it easily in an emergency.     TOP
