Looking for a Few Good Men and Women
Candidates for a New Regional Council Needed

As the two-year terms of the members of the present VUNA Regional Council draw to a close, VUNA is soliciting candidates for a new Regional Council. The election will probably take place in October and balloting will be conducted by e-mail and postal mail. Council terms extend for two years.

The Regional Council is VUNA's governing body and is elected by representatives from member organizations; individual members and associate organization members do not have voting rights. In addition to overseeing and voting on VUNA's policies and projects, Council members may serve as VUNA officers (President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Corresponding Secretary) and take responsibility for special projects. Ideally, the twelve Council members would represent the diversity of VUNA member organizations and their geographic distribution throughout North America. Access to e-mail is a near-necessity because most Council discussions and voting take place through e-mail or online meetings.

Candidates for election to the Regional Council must be individual members of VUNA and must be vegetarians as defined by VUNA (living upon a diet of grains, legumes, fruits, vegetables, and other products of the plant kingdom with or without the use of dairy products and eggs, to the entire exclusion of the flesh of animals). VUNA member groups and individuals may nominate suitable candidates. You are also welcome to nominate yourself if you are willing to commit the necessary time to helping VUNA promote a strong, effective, cooperative vegetarian movement throughout North America.

VUNA President Peter McQueen is hoping to hear from what he describes as "people with some time and the interest to contribute, people who will make VUNA their number one or two veggie volunteer effort." As an all-volunteer organization with no paid staff, VUNA can do nothing unless people step forward to do the work. The new millennium offers tremendous opportunities for the growth of vegetarianism as well as challenges that could threaten the momentum toward plant-based lifestyles that has been growing for several years. VUNA will also be adapting to changes made necessary by the new IVU Constitution. If you or someone you know would like to work with others to help the vegetarian movement flourish, please nominate them or yourself by contacting Peter McQueen, preferably by e-mail at pmcqueen@interlog.com, or at 33 Karnwood Drive, Scarborough, ON Canada M1L 2Z4.
