VEGETARIAN AWARENESS MONTH
Celebrate October as Vegetarian Awareness Month. In particular,
note World Vegetarian Day, October 1, and World Farm Animals Day, October
2 (the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, one of the greatest advocates for animals).
GRANTS, AWARDS, AND PRIZES FOR VEGETARIAN ADVOCACY
Sabina Fund
Established to honor the memory of FARM President Alex Hershaft's mother,
the Sabina Fund provides grants of $500 to $2,000 for grassroots projects
promoting plant-based diets and exposing the adverse impacts of animal agriculture.
Last year, funding went to groups for research, Internet access, display
materials, and community awareness campaigns.
The deadline for applications is November 15. Application guidelines

Audrey Fluke Award Nominations
The Vegetarian Resource Group gives recognition to persons who have promoted
vegetarianism in a cheerful and encouraging way through the annual Audrey
Fluke Award. To nominate someone, send your name and address, the nominee's
name and address, and a letter describing why he or she deserves this honor
to Audrey Fluke Vegetarian Award, The Vegetarian Resource Group, PO Box 1463, Baltimore, MD 21203, or by e-mail to vrg@vrg.org. Deadline: November 30.
Monthly Vegan Views Drawing
Author, vegan lifestyle columnist, and WVC presenter Joanne Stepaniak conducts
a monthly prize drawing at her Web site. To qualify, write an essay on the
topic of the month and e-mail it to Joanne. The winner of a random drawing from
among the month's participants will receive a gift, such as a copy of one
of Joanne's cookbooks. Some of the essays submitted will be published on
the Vegan Views section of Joanne's Web site. Topics, deadlines, and guidelines

SAN FRANCISCO, NEW ENGLAND HOST EVENTS
Hundreds enjoyed an outstanding program of speakers, exhibits, and a vegan lunch catered by Gold Medal chef Ken Bergeron at the 8th Annual New England Vegetarian Conference on April 29 in Vernon, Connecticut.
On May 7, the San Francisco Vegetarian Society and several co-sponsors presented VegFest. A large crowd took advantage of this opportunity to sample vegetarian foods, learn the benefits of a vegetarian diet, and see professional chefs create easy-to-prepare vegetarian dishes.
