Romance, Recovery, and Recognition for VUNA People
Congratulations to VUNA President Peter McQueen and Jenny Jones, a Trustee of the Vegetarian Society of the UK, who will celebrate their wedding during the coming World Vegetarian Congress! Peter and Jenny met at the January, 1999 WVC in Thailand and prove that the blurb on the Toronto Congress Web page is not just hype when it says, "Who knows, you may even meet a future soul mate!" The couple has graciously invited their friends attending the Congress to be present at the ceremony late Friday afternoon. The VUNA Council and all members of VUNA wish Peter and Jenny many blissful years together.
Power athlete and VUNA Councilor Ruth Heidrich of Hawaii, whose career as a triathlete appeared headed for the dumper after she suffered severe leg and hip fractures when hit by a truck a couple of years ago, has regained her winning form. Ruth states: "I'm happy to report that I'm back to racing. Have done eleven races this year so far with nine of the eleven first places. The other two were a second and a third--still haven't gotten back up to speed, literally as well as figuratively! I've still got the titanium rod in my leg and it may stay there because I shudder at the thought of more surgery!" Ruth's recovery is a testament to her determined spirit, general fitness, exceptionally hard work, and the health-promoting properties of a good vegan diet. Ruth is also, ahem, "over 60" and an inspiration to those of us who might be tempted to join the rocking chair set as the years creep up.
Ruth's example at the WVC in Thailand inspired Councilor Gerry Coffey of Alabama to get serious about her own running, which Gerry modestly describes as "just up to running a 10 K myself." "10 K" sounds pretty impressive to those of us whose endurance is more in the tenth K class! Gerry's son Darryl recently participated in his first Half Iron Man in Florida. He'll be competing in a full Iron Man meet in September. The tradition continues!
Super gardener and Councilor Dilip Barman of North Carolina
frequently exhibits his roses and prize-winning arrangements at rose shows.
See examples of Dilip's flowers at his rose page.
Dilip has also posted a computer-based slide presentation he developed with
PowerPoint called "Why Vegetarian" on the Triangle Vegetarian Society's Web page.
Kevin Pickard, Paul Turner, and Gerry Coffey of the VUNA Council are among the eight candidates for election to the IVU International Council. The election will take place at the Toronto World Congress.
The Vegetarian Food Fair Manual Project, under the direction
of Nancy Winemiller, is progressing well. A table of contents and final draft
of the text are posted on the Food
Fair Manual Web site, along with a description of a few ways you may
be able to help out. If you have questions or comments, you can reach Nancy at fairmanual@ivu.org. The best way to keep
informed on the status of the project is to visit the Web site occasionally.
