VIEWS - February 1998 (Volume 7, No. 3) |
This issue of VUNA Views is appearing about six weeks later
than its planned publication date. Contributing to the delay
were late receipt of articles, a busier than anticipated holiday
season, the sudden illness and death of our dog, and the monumental
ice storm that hit New England, northern New York, and parts
of Canada in early January. We were without power for 105 hours,
or almost five working days, and when our power was finally restored,
we had to take care of the many jobs that were impossible while
we had no "juice." We had severe damage to most of
the trees on our property; news reports stated that 90 per cent
of the trees in our county were damaged.
The practicality of a vegan diet came through clearly during
the power outage, as I had very little that was highly perishable
in my useless refrigerator. Since wood is our usual source of
heat and requires no electricity, we didn't have to leave the
house and were able to heat water and cook food on the wood stove.
Many areas of Canada were hit even harder than we were and
some people were still without power two weeks after the storm.
It was _not_ a pleasant experience, certainly not one we'll ever
forget. The full extent of tree damage will not be clear for
a few years, as the toll insects, disease, and drought may take
on weakened trees will not be apparent for a few seasons.
