Groups Bask in Success of Food Fairs |
From Kathleen Farley, TVA Food Fair Coordinator:
Thousands of visitors from throughout Canada, the US, and
even Italy converged upon Harbourfront Centre in Toronto on September
5, 6 and 7, 1997, to celebrate what has become North America's
largest annual vegetarian gathering: the Annual Toronto Vegetarian
Food Fair. Keynote speakers included Joseph Pace, Dr. Bhiku Jethalal,
Skid Crease, and author Erik Marcus. The enormous popularity
of ex-cattle rancher turned vegan Howard
Lyman was apparent as crowds lined up hours early for a chance
to hear this dynamic speaker, who graciously agreed to speak
a second time to accommodate the overflow.
This year's Food Fair featured over 70 exhibitors representing
a broad range of vegetarian organizations, food companies, distributors
and other services. Hourly cooking demonstrations, the "Not
Dressed to Kill" Fashion Show, and a Teen Vegetarian Panel
Discussion rounded out the weekend's events, along with professional
musical entertainment.
As the success of such a large event depends on the active
participation and dedication of hundreds of volunteers, businesses
and organizations, I wish to thank everyone involved for their
energy and enthusiasm. Plans are already underway for next year's
Annual Vegetarian Food Fair. For more information call the Toronto Vegetarian Association
at 416/533-3897.
From Evelyn Kimber of the Boston Vegetarian Society:
The Second Annual Boston Vegetarian Food Festival, held on
Sunday, October 26, 1997, was a huge success! Exhibitors who
have experience estimating how many people visit other big shows
figured our attendance to be 5,000 to 6,000 people--one even
thought 10,000! They used words like "phenomenal" to
describe their experience, and some exhibitors have already called
to sign up for next year.
The speakers and chefs had a great time, attendees were full
of enthusiasm, and there was a wonderful air of excitement and
the "good vibes" of a positive adventure for vegetarianism.
Many thanks for the hard work of all volunteers!
