World's
Vegetarians to Gather for 33rd World Congress |
The Lotus Pang Suan Kaew Hotel in Chiang Mai, Thailand, will
host the 33rd World Vegetarian Congress from January 4-10, 1999.
Some VUNA officers and Regional Council members plan to join
attendees from almost every continent, with Thailand, India,
the United Kingdom, the United States, and Australia having the
most registrations.
As described on the Congress's
Web page, "The lectures and presentations, by local
and international speakers, will focus on the economic, ethical,
spiritual, environmental or scientific aspects of vegetarianism,
and on the search for practical solutions to stem the global
food crisis that threatens the disruption of vital eco-systems,
and the increasing ecological and social upheaval caused by wrong
food choices. The proposed programme will also address different
techniques and campaigning methods for the promotion of vegetarianism."
While it is probably still possible to register for the Congress,
transportation to Thailand may be difficult to arrange at this
late date and rooms reserved by the IVU at the hotel are already
booked (other accommodations may be available).
For last-minute information on the Congress, send e-mail to
thai99@ivu.org with your questions. VUNA Council member Gerry
Coffey may be contacted if you are going and would like to be
in touch with other North Americans. You can write to her before
December 26 at 28 Harbor View Court, Decatur, AL 35601; phone,
256-350-2823; e-mail: gmcoffey@aol.com. The next issue of _VUNA
Views_ will feature reports on the Congress from those who will
attend.
