TVA Seeks Input for Next World Vegetarian Congress
The Toronto Vegetarian Association, which will host the 34th
World Vegetarian Congress from July 10-16, 2000, is seeking suggestions
for speakers and also wants to hear about people's good and bad
Congress and conference experiences. There are forms on TVA's
Web site (TVA), or contact
the Congress e-mail address (wvc2000@veg.on.ca)
or the Toronto Vegetarian Association, PO Box 2307, Toronto,

who expect to attend the Congress.
Plan an Event around the Great American Meatout
On March 20, the Farm Animal Reform Movement will again sponsor
the Great American Meatout, the most widely publicized and observed
vegetarian event in North America. Take advantage of this opportunity
as a group or individual to promote the advantages of a meatless
diet. Some suggestions: hold a vegetarian dinner or potluck open
to the public; ask your favorite restaurant to feature vegetarian
specials in honor of the Meatout; talk to your company cafeteria
or child's school about having a "meatless day" or
at least meatless offerings around March 20, a Saturday; invite
public officials and the press to a veggie food tasting; hand
out vegetarian literature at a supermarket or natural food store
(few are exclusively vegetarian); write a letter to the editor
on the benefits of an animal-free diet; put up an exhibit on
vegetarianism at a library. For more information, posters, or
handout literature, contact FARM, Box 30654, Bethesda, MD 20824
(www.meatout.org).
E-mail Course on Judaism and Vegetarianism to Begin in
March
Richard Schwartz, author of _Judaism and Vegetarianism_ and_
Judaism and Global Survival_, will be giving a free 10-week course
on "Judaism and Vegetarianism" using e-mail, starting
the first week in March, 1999.
Material on the week's topic will be sent out to each registered
participant. The course is open to everyone and all questions
that come up will be seriously considered and discussed. For
information or to register, contact Richard Schwartz at schwartz@postbox.csi.cuny.edu.
VUNA Councillors on the Mend
Ruth Heidrich of Hawaii, whose bone-breaking encounter with
a truck was described in the last issue of _VUNA Views_, continues
her healing with the goal of returning to championship status
as a triathlete. Ruth does admit impatience with her slower-than-hoped-for
pace (by her standards, that is), saying, "They keep telling
me it'll take time but I had no idea how MUCH time." Ruth
is traveling to the WVC in Chiang Mai and will be speaking on
vegan athletes.
Dilip Barman of North Carolina has recovered from a week of
flu followed by a week of kidney stones (ouch!).
